It’s open to anyone who wishes to come. The main focus will be the elections.

It’s that time of year now. The King’s LGBT are preparing to welcome a new committee. In order to do that we need to assign the positions to people.

If you wish to be on the committee you need to attend the AGM. If your desired position is contested you can use the time to tell the society why you are suited for the role. In general this should allows us to make the transition smooth. We will evaluate the year, talk about future plans and allow any interested parties to become acquainted with the structure of the committee. If the position is contested we will have a vote to who the most suitable candidate is. More information on how this will done are to come.

To make it more fun we’ve decided to have a “pot luck” event. Everyone brings some food or other edible item to share.

The members that have shown interest will be published on the website and on Facebook with a max 150 word manifest.

Available positions are:
President (you can only run if you’ve been on the committee for a year previously, if no such candidate available the rule will be disregarded).
Michael Fanner running for President
I am a 2nd year nursing student and have previously served on the committee as the campaigns officer which has enabled me to gain insight of how King’s LGBT runs and how it can be improved. For me, the membership is the most important part of the LGBT and I believe the society can provide excellent opportunities for fun events to socialise and mix with like-minded people as well as protecting and promoting the LGBT rights of the King’s student community through increasing welfare resources and campaign activism.
If I become president, I plan to focus on furthering LGBT rights activism such as challenging the current ban on blood donation of men who sleep with men and also work on eradicating homophobia across the college by facilitating interesting discussions and talks. I also plan to build upon the fantastic array of social events we have all enjoyed this year and to increase participation with other universities. This year, I will introduce a new constitutional role of Freshers’ Rep to make sure we remain a very member focused society.
Welfare Officer
Jonny Roland – running for welfare
Dear all,
Moving to London is a big change in anyone’s life, but leaving the comforts and safety (or otherwise) of home as an LGBT student makes it even bigger. I want to make sure that when our freshers arrive they are given the knowledge and help they need: what and where is safe; who to talk to for advice; where to go when they have a problem.
It’s not just freshers though: we all have things to deal with in life from time to time, and it’s important that King’s LGBT, known over the city as ‘the friendly LGBT’ helps all its members when they’re in difficulty. As Welfare Officer I would be here to offer advice and guidance whenever anyone needed it and ensure that King’s continues to provide a safe and welcoming space for all its LGBT students.
Campaigns Officer
Nick Lenox – Smith
I would work hard as campaigns officer to raise awareness of important issues, whether they be issues within the LGBT community or our issues within wider society. Before coming to university I worked for Oxfam for three years, campaigning and volunteering in shops, raising money for the charity so I understand how important it is to do your bit for what you believe in. We need to keep fighting for equal rights, keep fighting against homophobia (not just in our country but worldwide) and keep highlighting important issues such as HIV/AIDS. I know that as a group we can gain and give our support to make a difference.
Treasurer
Hello! I am Jonathan, studying law at King’s. I am standing for Treasurer at King’s LGBT as I think this is an exciting role within the society with plenty of scope for diversity and most of all, LGBT fun.
Why should I be the Treasurer? Most importantly, being treasurer requires high levels of organization and management, and I hope I can convince you in saying these characteristics come naturally in my day to day life. I’m also looking forward to ensuring that King’s LGBT finances remain out of the red to ensure our socials and events are the best in London.
What will I do as Treasurer? I promise to uphold and improve the current diverse range of events the society offers its members by keeping the finances in check and ensuring the money the society spends is balanced and proportionate. One of my main hopes is to bring more inter-university events with our LGBT friends at UCL, LSE etc. and as Treasurer I will be able to liaise with the other Treasurers from these institutions.

Website Officer
Matthew Pitt – running for Website Officer
Hi, I’m Matthew, and I’m running for the Website Officer position. As a first year, I’ve found that the website and Facebook group have been invaluable tools for promotion of the King’s LGBT society, and they have allowed me and fellow first years to become easily aware of, involved in, and integrated with the community. As such, I feel that maintaining the LGBT’s online presence is vital in continuing the success of the group.
As Website Officer, I fully intend to make the website and Facebook group as accessible as possible, and increase awareness of the society through regular posts and updates. I also plan to work closely with particular committee members to ensure that sufficient promotion is given to our events – both in online and offline contexts – for existing, as well as potential members. Through this, King’s will continue to have one of the strongest LGBT communities in London.
Events Officer
Communications Officer
Matthew Hannam – Running for Communications Officer
Hi, all. As a current first year undergraduate, the LGBT society has been an excellent way for me to meet new people through the various events that have been held throughout the year. If I am elected Communications Officer, my main goal would be to ensure that these socials continue to be promoted and well-organised for both new and regular LGBT members.
Working with the committee, I will keep you updated about society news and ensure that our events are published on Facebook. I’d also extend this to promoting and advertising our upcoming socials on campus. With London offering so much for the LGBT community, I also think it’s important to keep you informed about what’s happening outside of the society. This could be in the form of a regular online newsletter that would provide you with relevant student news and information about other LGBT events in London.
Women’s officer
KATIE WEEKS – running for women’s officer.
Hello all. I am a second year Law student at King’s, running for Women’s Officer. I think the LGBTQ society is very important, with scope to make a big difference both in and outside the University.
I am running for Women’s Officer as I believe sometimes women are a minority and need to have good representation on the committee and more awareness generally. I hope that I am both a friendly and approachable person and will do my best to ensure this is role is filled to the best of my ability.
As Women’s officer I would like to try and organise female events, get involved in some lobbying and be a good representative of women on the committee. I would also like to get the society involved in not only women related issues and campaigns, but others such as the Equal Love Campaign and work with Revel and Riot.
If you have any questions about what the position entails, send me a message and it will be explained to you.
Regards,
Alana

————-

Hey, everyone. Apologies for the late notice *mumble exams etc.*. As many of you may have realised we have not yet had an election for President, which was the only contested position at the AGM we held back in April.

The election will be taking place TOMORROW on the kclsu website (www.kclsu.org) from 9am. King’s students simply need go to the website and vote using their King’s login details.

The two candidates standing are: ALANA JAMIL and TOMAS INCE – their manifestos can be found below:

TOMAS INCE -
‘I am vibrant and likable character who would thoroughly enjoy and look forward to becoming the LGBT president for my final year at Kings. My focus would be to bring the LBGT together on social occasions, both low key and larger events such as a freshers charity ball promoting awareness around discrimination on the grounds of sexuality. I recently attented the speed dating and throughly enjoyed myself. I can only hope to promote more events like this on a more frequent basis e.g QUIZZ NIGHT!! This will hopefully encourage more members and built rapport among existing members. So make a fabulous choice and i’ll be your voice.’

ALANA JAMIL -
‘I’m running for president of the LGBT society for the 2010/11 academic year. I have served as your events officer for the two past committees. It’s time to put the experience into practise. I helped starting up the committee again after it fell through, much has been accomplished and a lot has yet to be done. The LGBT needs more presence and promotion. It needs to be a safe space and a place where like minded can meet. I want to get as many as possible involved, regardless of their interests and age. I will work hard to tailor events according to demand, and make sure that there are more campaigns and workshops next year so that those interested can take part. A wide variety of social events are also necessary. And a bigger impact should be made at freshers fair. People should know that we exist from the moment they step foot on King’s College.’
